Thomas W. Schaller, AWS
AMERICAN WATERCOLOR SOCIETY

In his own words: "There is a universe of possibility that spans the distance between what we look at and what we see.  And in that space is our experience of the world.  This is what I try to paint - the experience of seeing my world - from perspectives both external and from within.  And as such, dreams, memories, and pure imagination are every bit as valid  as is anything that can be physically observed."

Joel Popadics
AMERICAN WATERCOLOR SOCIETY

Joel Popadics has been a professional artist for over 30 years. Popadics is an advocate of watercolor and has dedicated his career to the advancement and appreciation of the medium.

Artist Statement:
My formal art training was in oil painting and while I appreciate all that I learned about oils, I love the look and essence of watercolor. When I work with watercolor, I am reminded how unpredictable life is and to always expect the unexpected. I like the feel of a handmade sheet of paper; the cotton fiber surface is slightly irregular and it is surprisingly heavy. Before I start a picture, I know a small spot somewhere on it will be left untouched, unpainted and reserved for my highest value. When I look at a blank sheet, I often ponder where that preserved white will occur.

Lois Davidson
Ink & Stick Pen

Homemade wooden stick pens are my favorite tool to use for ink drawing or line and wash paintings, the lines and marks achieved are somewhere between a pen and paint effect, from heavy black smears to delicate fine lines and 'dry brush' type effects, all with a soft, charcoal-like finish. All you need is a some waterproof ink - I prefer Indian Ink - a wooden stick and carve the end into a rough point, or something like a chopstick or an old wooden paint brush end that you can sharpen in a pencil sharpener!
